How can I apply for WMA?  Am I qualified to apply?  When is the next test?

TESTING & QUALIFICATIONS
WMA is always looking for qualified archers to join our program, particularly those who live in close proximity to the areas being hunted.  Because of the sensitive nature of many of the areas we hunt, we have to insist that applicants come to us with some experience under their belt.  Some hunters feel that simply purchasing a hunting license should be sufficient, but unfortunately merely possessing a hunting license does not demonstrate the experience, skill level, and objectives of the holder.

If you enjoy harvesting doe like this lucky hunter then we want to hear from you!

So how can I apply?
Simple - Check this page early in the year for information on the times and locations of the upcoming qualifying sessions.  Our best advice is to check back here often!

What qualifications do I need to apply?
  • Applicants must be able to present photographic proof of at least 3 big game archery kills.  We understand that many experienced archers rarely photograph every deer they kill, but we also know that when we first start harvesting animals it’s a big deal - and we take lots of photos.  Just bring photos of any 3 animals with you.

  • Applicants can not have been convicted of any game law violation.

  • Applicants are encouraged to have successfully completed a PABE or NBEF Bowhunter Education Course before the date of the qualifier.  While successful applicants have until nearly opening day to take and successfully complete the course, we strongly suggest getting it out of the way early.

  • Applicants will be required to successfully complete a shooting proficiency test from an elevated platform, using hunting bow, arrows, and broadheads.  This isn’t as tough as it sounds… if you can kill a deer at 20 yards you’ll do fine.

  • Applicants will be required to successfully complete an interview with the interview committee.  This is where we explore your motives for wanting to join WMA; if you have a genuine love of archery hunting and the outdoors, you’ll do fine.  If you look at this as a way to kill a trophy buck, we’re not the organization for you.

  • An applicant list is given to the Pennsylvania Game Commission to determine if any applicant has any game law convictions.  In some instances, participating municipalities ask their police departments to conduct background checks on applicants as well.
