It was obvious from the start that Mother Nature and the weatherman were conspiring to make Dale Cornetti's hunt a washout, and judging from the smile on his face it was also obvious that Dale was having none of that!
Dale traveled from Slippery Rock for the chance to hunt on Ed Strippey's property in Sewickley Heights. Arriving at Ed's place well before dawn, Dale was ready for a full day of hunting, and little did he know things would get so wet and wild!
What turned into an all-day rain arrived shortly after Dale did, but the weather did nothing to dampen Dale's enthusiasm. With two antlerless deer tags safe and dry in his pocket, it was obvious that nothing was going to keep Dale from putting some venison in the freezer.
Originally, Dale thought he had little chance of filling two tags on the day's hunt so when he applied for his tags he put in for one tag for WMA 2B for this day's hunt and a second for WMA 2D. In what turned out to be a stroke of luck, he received two tags for WMA 2B instead. Considering the day he was in for, Dale couldn't have experienced a better "mistake". As the day progressed, not only was Dale able to punch both tags, this was the first time ever that he was able to be selective and actually let young deer pass while he waited for not one but two mature doe.
Even with the less-than-ideal weather, we had a great time hunting with Dale, and we sure hope we get to see him again I the future!
Special thanks to Ed Strippey and his Father Ed Sr., who spent his entire day making this hunt a success. Even though big Ed didn't want his photo taken he is still one special person, and we're starting to wonder if he is just camera shy or maybe a wanted man. Seriously, many thanks to big Ed and you really did a great job with your son…
Finally, our thanks to Barnett Crossbows for donating the crossbow that made Dale's hunt possible.
